SUP board options: purchase and rental costs in Cyprus

Table of content

Cyprus, with its crystal-clear waters and picturesque coastlines, is a perfect destination for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). Whether you are a beginner or an experienced paddler, understanding the costs and options available for buying or renting a SUP board on the island can help you make the most of your adventure for the reasonable in your case cost.

So the first question is “to rent or to buy a SUP in Cyprus?”

Let’s try to answer!

Buying a SUP Board in Cyprus

If you’re a frequent paddleboarder or plan to use your board long-term, purchasing a SUP board might be the best option. Here’s what to expect:

Types of SUP Boards

  1. Inflatable SUP Boards:
    – Portable and easy to store.
    – Ideal for travelers or beginners.
    – Not as strong as hard ones – rocks can damage it fatally
    – Prices range from €250 to €1000, depending on the brand and quality.
  2. Hard (Epoxy) SUP Boards:
    – Rigid and better suited for performance.
    – Recommended for advanced paddlers or those prioritizing speed and stability.
    – Needs much place for storage and for transporting.
    – Prices range from €600 to €1,200.
  3. Specialty Boards (e.g., touring, racing, or yoga boards):
    – Designed for specific activities.
    – Prices can go up to €1,500 or more for high-end models.
    – These models are good only for experienced paddlers who know for sure what they need.

Where to Buy

  • Sporting Goods Stores. Popular options include Decathlon, SportsDirect or local water sports shops in cities like Limassol, Larnaca, Ayia Napa and Paphos.
  • Chain Supermarkets like Lidl, Metro, Alphamega and others. In the beginning of the season (usually April – May) they always have propositions of cheap models for beginners that cost usually €300-400.
  • Online Retailers. Websites like Amazon or Cyprus-specific marketplaces often have competitive deals.
  • Second-Hand Market. Platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Bazaraki (main sell-buy platform in Cyprus) offer used SUP boards at discounted prices, starting as low as €150. It can be a good option but at the same time you can buy a cheap SUP from bad rubber that can usually work not more than 2-3 seasons so when you inflate it after storage it can just burst and your money will burst too.

Renting a SUP Board in Cyprus

If you’re visiting Cyprus for a short time or want to try paddleboarding before committing to a purchase, renting is a convenient option.

Rental Costs

  • Hourly Rental:
    – Prices range from €20 to €40 per hour. The highest prices are at local Water Sports on beaches – here you get a SUP already inflated and in the place you need it so the price is reasonable if you rent it for 1-2 hours. Sometimes there is an option of half an hour rent too.
    – Includes the board, paddle, and sometimes a life jacket.
  • Half-Day or Full-Day Rentals:
    – Half-day (4 hours): €30 to €50.
    – Full-day (8 hours): €50 to €80.
  • Weekly Rentals:
    – Ideal for extended vacations.
    – Prices range from €120 to €200 per week, depending on the board type and rental provider.
    – If you want to rent a SUP for some days you also need to think about storage for it if it’s inflated or you will have to inflate and deflate it every day.

Rental Locations

  • Tourist Beaches: Popular spots like Nissi Beach (Ayia Napa), Fig Tree Bay (Protaras), and Coral Bay (Paphos) have rental kiosks.
  • Water Sports Centers: Many centers offer additional services, such as guided tours or SUP yoga classes.
  • Private Rentals: Some companies deliver boards to your location for a small fee or even free, making it convenient for those staying in villas or private accommodations.

Our company has an option of rent and delivery of SUPs (like any other gadgets and sport equipment) to your location in Cyprus or even to the airport.

Tips for Choosing the Right Option

  • Beginners can try first inflatable boards and hourly rentals to test the waters.
  • Frequent Users. Buying an inflatable or hard board might be more cost-effective in the long run. Meanwhile buying is a good option for locals, if you are a frequent paddler but you go to Cyprus for a vacation bringing you SUP with you will cost you a penny because of price of luggage in airlines – so renting is a better option in this case too.
  • Travelers: Weekly rentals are often the best value for extended trips.
  • Local paddlers. Buying is the best option.

Additional Costs to Consider

  • Accessories: Paddle, leash, pump (for inflatables), and repair kits can add €50–€150 if not included. Usually all these options are included in the models for beginners but if you want the accessories of better quality you will have to buy it.
  • Lessons: Beginner lessons typically cost €25–€50 per session.
  • Delivery Fees: Some rental companies charge €10–€20 for delivering boards to remote locations.

Whether you choose to buy or rent, Cyprus offers a range of SUP board options to suit every budget and preference. From serene coastal paddles to exploring hidden coves, a SUP board is your ticket to unforgettable adventures on the island. So grab a board and paddle—the turquoise waters of Cyprus await!
